a10d Youth Advisors

Young people who help shape how kids learn to attend

Youth Advisors work directly with the a10d team — sharing their perspective, generating ideas, testing activities, and co-creating a program that’s actually meant for them. No experience required. Just curiosity.

  • We have three cohorts of advisors:

    • Tweens (ages 10-12)

    • Teens (ages 13-15)

    • Mentors (ages 16-18)

  • Each week you'll get a prompt via text message and reply with your thoughts within a week. Four times a year, you'll join a live Zoom session with your age group. That's it.

  • Advisors directly shape a10d, develop real skills, become part of a tight community and earn fun gifts and the chance to reference the experience in for jobs, college, etc.

  • Fill out a short application to apply yourself. Someone else can nominate you, too. Read more about the process below…

  • No. Advisors do not need to have their own phones. They just need a device that is accessible to them on which they can receive and send one text message once per week. And, once a season, they’ll need to have a way to join a live session using Zoom.

WHO IT’S FOR

Advisors meet in three distinct cohorts:

WHAT ADVISORS DO

One text a week. One group call every 3 months.

Each week you'll get a prompt via text message. Then, you reply with your thoughts within a week. Four times a year, you'll join a live Zoom session with your age group. That's it.

Most times, considering and responding to prompts takes 10-30 minutes total each week, and prompts come in three general types:

  • Attend to you—Try something, then tell us how it went.

  • Attend to others—Try something involving other people, then reflect.

  • Share your perspective—Tell us what you think about a topic or idea.

You can reply by text, audio, or video — whatever feels right. All responses are kept anonymous. And, once a month, we circle back to let you and all advisors know what we learned and how we put your input into action.

What happens if you can’t participate one week? We understand that there may be the occasional week when it’s hard to fit a10d advising in. We just ask that you give us a heads up.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

We're looking for kids who are: genuinely curious; up for trying new things; able to listen well to others; and willing to share their honest opinions with young people and adults.

WHAT YOU GET OUT OF IT

  • Your ideas directly shape the a10d program — activities, prompts, features, and culture.

  • You'll practice reflecting, communicating your ideas, and advocating within an organization that impacts people’s lives.

  • Be part of a small group of kids from different places who are thinking and caring about: attention, how technology impacts their lives, what makes them and all humans so amazing, and how they can focus on the things and people they care most about.

  • We celebrate your contributions each time we meet, unlock fun stuff (e.g. stickers, an a10d t-shirt), and this becomes an experience you can reference on future applications (job, college, etc).

MORE DETAILS

For parents & caregivers | For people nominating someone | Time commitment

  • Parents or caregivers will receive one text per month summarizing how the program is going and what's coming up.

  • All advisor responses are kept anonymous — we may use or share your feedback, ideas or insights to help kids, but we will never share your name or likeness without your and a parent/caregiver’s permission.

  • Advisors can reply to prompts using a parent's or caregiver's device, if they don't have their own.

  • You'll be asked to sign an agreement before your child joins. You can preview a copy of that agreement on the Youth Advisor Terms, Conditions & Privacy page. Questions and feedback are always welcome, too! Just email us at hey@a10d.org!

HOW JOINING WORKS

  1. Apply or get nominated.

Go to a10d.org/apply to apply yourself. Someone else can nominate you, too, at a10d.org/nominate. If they do, we’ll send you the application and let you know who nominated you to apply.

  2. The a10d team reviews.

We look at kids’ curiosity, interest in attention, and commitment. And, we make sure there is space in the right age group. We are not able to accept all applicants, and when we can’t find a spot, we’ll make sure candidates are put on the waitlist and notified.

  3. You're accepted.

You and your parent/caregiver are notified. A waiver is signed, and a welcome package is sent to you.

  4. Welcome from the team.

A personalized video from a10d Founders, Meghan and Brian, a note from your group facilitator, and a welcome orientation video arrive by text.

  5. Prompts begin.

Your first weekly text arrives. You're an advisor!
